AIU: Minimizing impact of COVID-19 on students

The global crisis with spread of COVID-19 is not only creating havoc on health of people, global economies but also having devastating impact on education system due to closure of Universities, Colleges and Schools around the world. While social distancing through closure of educational institutions is inevitable to contain the spread of the COVID-19, the prolonged closure may severally impact the accessibility of education to the students and may result in the loss of academic learning, semester, academic calendar etc. Therefore, during this time of uncertainty, the need of the hour is to gear up itself for delivery of contents through online learning to minimize the loss of academic learning and initiate recovery strategies
amid the crisis.

While many universities across the globe are ontemplating the option of moving on to online education, the preparedness of the Indian Universities in imparting online quality education to Indian students amid COVID-19 crisis is limited. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Technological interventions during a crisis can prevent further loss of student time and in fact regain the lost time during all these days by mitigating the impact of loss on students and learning. It is an opportunity for all Vice Chancellors, Educational administrators and policy makers to use this crisis as an opportunity to introduce new learning models that can reach everyone, to make the system more resilient.

Association of Indian Universities (AIU) has therefore taken the lead to create this platform wherein the member Indian Universities can share the e-content,approaches and strategies adopted by them for delivery of online content to prevent academic loss. AIU invites suggestions, comments, inputs, sharing of best practices and even the concerns and difficulties faced by the Vice Chancellors, Directors, Professors to minimize the impact of COVID-19 on the Indian Higher Education space through technology intervention.

  1. I am sending power-points, word-files as detailed analysis of the relevant papers of the course. I am also audio-recording my lectures and sending these audio-files by We Transfer to the students. I have not yet held a Zoom Class

  2. Our class size is rather big-around 350 students, and we are a group of 4 teachers responsible for the lecturing and tutorials. We have created 4 google groups to communicate documents. As of now, I am asking them to refer to opensource study resources. I give an inline introduction to the study material to make it easier for them to follow the topic. I am not sure how many have good connectivity to download many documents and I am also very aware that mine is not the only course that they are studying. Hence, have chosen this mode for the time being.

Further, we have created four separate e-mail accounts for these 4 groups (of around 80 students each)to enable them to submit their tutorial assignments. We have advised them to use CamScan/ClearScan (free apps convenient for phones) through which they can conveniently scan their hand-written assignments by phone and e-mail them.

As for my students in the laboratory course, again I have created a google group. Here, the class size is smaller (around 40 students), so they can share their reports on this platform.

Am aware that everyone might not have a computer, but I have noticed in class that many have a smartphone. So, hopefully the above steps will not be too difficult for most. Will know in a few days.

Tomorrow, I would be doing a Zoom/Skype class with some students to clear some of their doubts. Let’s see how it goes.

Further, we have encouraged group activities in their assignments, with the view that this will help them stay connected with one another in these unusual circumstances.

  3. I have prepared powerpoint presentation to replace white board and with the help of zoom, showing these to students and parallelly explaining each and every concept there. Zoom is an interactive app through which students can ask queries there and then which can be answered instantly.

Let us cease this crisis as an opportunites by indian universities, as more than 60% of indian graduatesc abroad for higher studies… but the situation has changed that foriegn countries are no more safe, there is immigration of these students let us create a platform to retain and to provide online with experties in education field will make india has one of the education destination in future. As i felt number of students who are staying in India prefer to stayback rather going to their native land shows a positive sign in our higher education system

  6. I request the association to make an open access for resources persons available in India, who are voluntarily interested in spreading the knowledge to the students community. make a forum of experts whom the student can access easily for future references in higher studies. Research organisations has to come forward with research goals to promote research activities. Short term activities like providing training to crack the iceberg of publishing research articles to reputed journals. and long term activities like publishing dissertation, thesis and research works to the global communities. take all necessary steps to make our youths show more interest in research activities.
